Steve McCurry is one of my favorite photographers, and I know I’m not the only one.  There’s a ton of photographers out there that mimic his style, which may or may not be a good thing.  I’ve seen so many photographers going out and collecting portrait images of men in turbans staring blankly into the lens of their camera, I call it McCurryism.  I think many people in the arts feel the need to emulate the top people with-in their chosen medium.  I know I do.  But is that always being honest to yourself and to your own creativity?  Part of what I love about photography is trying to show how I see the world through my own eyes, and I think if I am going out hunting down images that mimic other images then I am not being true to my own vision.  I am not saying at all that pictures of men in turbans should not be taken unless you’re Steve McCurry.  I guess what I am saying is that when I go out I sometimes struggle with taking photographs from the heart as opposed to what I have seen before.  And are the two even separable, how can you ignore your influences?  Maybe I want to capture photographs that gave me the same feeling as others I have seen and respect, not a carbon copy but an emotional one…  This is where Steve’s photographs come in, they make me feel things, they make me want to go out and make my own, but I have to be careful I am taking photographs from an emotional standpoint as opposed to a visual one, at least that’s what I want to do.

Michael Ray’s Food Photography Blog:

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

My wife is an awesome cook, and I mean an AWESOME cook!!!  It’s hard not to gain some extra pounds with all the wonderful things she…literally…brings to the table.  So I’ve been thinking, why don’t I try and get some shots of this stuff, I have always had an interest in food photography but just never really had the food.  So after doing some research I came upon site site, Michael Ray’s Food Photography Blog, no relation to Rachael Ray as far as I can tell.

Craft & Vision

Just stumbled across this and thought I’d share. I visit the Pixelated Image site (David Duchemins site) quite a bit, his blog is always updated with useful and thoughtful information on photography and image making. He’s written a few e-books on technique, vision ect… And now I guess he’s created a site were other authors can sell e-books as well, and the nice things is they are very affordable, 5 bucks for most of them. Looking at the Authors page I am excited to see an e-book from Gavin Gough coming out soon titled “Introduction to Making Money In Stock Photography”. Since he’s a stock travel photographer I think it’ll be an interesting read, here’s the link to the Craft and Vision site:

Importing your Blogger posts to your Wordpress blog!

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Wow, I didn’t even know you could do this!  I had a blog on Blogger and just imported all of my posts to my new Wordpress blog using the importer built into Wordpress, it literally took about 30 seconds.  Here’s the instructions and a link to the page since you can use this on a number of other blogs as well.

http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_Content

Users of WordPress 2.2 and above can import from Blogger. Earlier versions cannot import from Blogger because “New Blogger” was released by Google, invalidating all the old importers. Only WordPress 2.2 and later has support for “New Blogger”.

If you haven’t already, you must be using New Blogger and a Google Account on Blogger. If you are still using Old Blogger, the importer will not work.

Starting the importer

WordPress 2.7

In the left-side navigation, click Tools to expand the submenu. Next, scroll down if necessary and click Import to show the various import options. Next, click Blogger and follow the directions.

WordPress 2.2 to 2.6.5

Go to Manage → Import → Blogger and follow the directions.

Amazing work!

From the Boston Globes, “Big Picture” blog comes a set of photographs from photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand. If you visit the site now they’ve cut the image from 38 down to ten, but thanks to Google cache you can see the original 38 here. What’s also cool is that you can click on “map” in the text below the image and it will bring you to Google maps! Don’t forget to turn on “Satellite” and under “More” you can also try turning on Wikipedia and Photos.
